Al-Swar District

In Yanbu Governorate, where history mingles with the waves of the Red Sea, the historic Al-Swar District is a testimony of a vibrant commercial era. The shops tell the stories of the merchants who formed a unique economic and social fabric. The towering traditional houses, once home to Yanbu's merchants, still retain their traditional coastal style, with their multi-story buildings, walls constructed from excavated sea stone, ‘mashrabiyas’ and wooden doors adorned with intricate details, and ceilings supported by palm trunks, giving the district a unique captivating character. Al-Swar District was an important commercial center in Yanbu. Its ancient lanes embrace many famous buildings, such as Babtain House, Jabarti House, several commercial agencies, the traditional Night Market and the historic Al-Shuna Tower. In 2013, restoration of this ancient cultural and social heritage site was launched, preserving its features and revitalizing its facilities. Three years later, a new phase of development witnessed the restoration of 25 heritage buildings, four markets, and heritage agencies comprising over 100 heritage shops, in addition to renovating walkways and waterfront. The district enjoys a direct view of the Red Sea coast. The Night Market Restoration Project has been completed, allowing this heritage market to resume its role as a hub where merchants and craftsmen can meet, bringing it back to the vibrant souq as had been fifty years ago and rehabilitating it as a source of income for many citizens. Today, Al-Swar District is a fascinating tourist and cultural destination, attracting visitors from all over the world. Visitors of the site experience the exquisite monuments of the past which are in tune with rhythms of the present. Al-Swar District Visitor Center utilizes the latest digital technologies to enable visitors to explore the details of this ancient district from a new perspective.
