Al-Bassam House

Located near the western gate of the old city of Unaizah, known as Bab Al-Khala, Al-Bassam Heritage House stands out as a symbol of the architectural history of Al-Qassim Province. It is characterized by its unique architectural style and beautiful mud structure. Construction of the house began in 1374 AH (1974 AD), on an area of 3,500 m². Originally built over a duration of four years, it was restored in several stages, the last of which took place in 1440 AH. It was then transformed into a heritage center, becoming a living witness to the local history. This one-story house consists of 17 rooms of varying sizes and functions. It was originally divided into four main sections: a men's reception area, a family area, a garden, and a livestock enclosure. The house also features an open courtyard (shamsa), a great hall (majlis) and a dining hall. Bayt Al-Bassam features an architectural style reflecting the urban development of Najd. Clay is the primary building material, while stones were used in the foundations. Gypsum was used to connect the stones on the foundations and columns. Tamarisk wood and palm fronds were used in roofs, doors and windows. The decorative patterns and formations, both internal and external, constitute a seamless artistic masterpiece in harmony with the other elements, from the large windows of the majlis, known as ‘shutters’, to the wall recesses (rawzana), which were used for storing everyday necessities, to the ‘kamar’, a decorative plaster cabinet for jugs and coffee pots, adjacent to the fireplace. Today, Al-Bassam Heritage House has become a center for heritage and cultural events and activities, attracting visitors from a variety of backgrounds, including tourist and student delegations. Through ongoing activities, this house contributes to reviving popular heritage and introducing it to new generations. It is a symbol of heritage in Unaizah and Al-Qassim.
